MIDDLETOWN - The Middletown Board of Education is announcing the appointment of Dr. Joseph Macary as the new District Superintendent, effective July 6, 2026.
Dr. Joseph Macary is an award-winning educational leader currently serving as the Superintendent of Vernon Public Schools in Connecticut. With a comprehensive career spanning classroom teaching, department leadership, and district administration, he has a proven track record of driving student achievement and fostering strong community relations.
“I am honored to be selected as the next Superintendent of Schools for the City of Middletown. I would like to thank the Board of Education for their confidence in me to lead the district to the next level of educational excellence,” said Dr. Macary. “Middletown is a caring community that values education and together we are going to do what is best for all students,” he continued.
A native of Waterbury CT, Dr. Macary is a graduate of the University of Connecticut (BA), Quinnipiac College (MA), Southern Connecticut State University (6th Year Degree), and the University of Connecticut (Ed.D.). He has received numerous accolades including 2024 Superintendent of the Year from Connecticut Association of Public-School Superintendents (CAPSS); 2023 Outstanding Superintendent, UCONN NEAG Alumni Board; 2022 Albert J. Kerkan Award, VRABE (for exemplary leadership in Adult Education); 2016 Distinguished Alumni, Executive Leadership Program at UCONN; 2014 Educator of the Year, Greater Waterbury Boys & Girls Club; and U.S. Department of Education ‘Blue Ribbon Schools’ – Awarded to Vernon Public Schools (2000 & 2023).
In addition, Dr. Macary is an Internship Coordinator & Mentor with UCONN Executive Leadership Program, a Lead Visitor with New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC) for International School Visits, and the Former President of the University of Connecticut NEAG Alumni Board.
“The Board of Education confidently and unanimously chose Dr. Joseph Macary from a pool of thirty applicants to be the next Superintendent of Schools. He is coming to Middletown from a high ranking Alliance district that has seen much growth in his tenure,” said Sheila Daniels, Middletown Board of Education Chairwoman. “We are eager to work with Dr. Macary to bring our district to new heights, seeing educational advancement for all of the students, as well as supporting their families, and our faculty and staff.”
Dr. Alan Addley, who is currently serving as Interim Superintendent of Schools, will continue in the role until the completion of his contract this summer. Dr. Addley will support Dr. Macary and the Middletown Public Schools administration to ensure a smooth and successful transition between superintendents. The District and the Board of Education is incredibly grateful for Dr. Addley’s leadership and service to the community during this school year.
The executive candidate search was conducted by New England School Development Council (NESDEC), led by Christine Syriac and Vonda Tencza.
